DVD: Gracie! (PG), Brian Percival (DVD, 78 mins)

A perfect present for the grandparents this Christmas. Gracie! is a wartime romantic comedy-drama, starring Jane Horrocks as Gracie Fields, the humanitarian, singer and actress.

Set just as Second World War breaks out, this well-acted drama focuses on the much loved Rochdale lass and her passion to please everyone around her, which meant that her lovesick husband, the Italian Hollywood director Monty Banks (played by Tom Hollander), tended to miss out.

Gracie is portrayed as a compassionate and tough woman, someone who, at the time, everyone could relate too; a working-class heroine of sorts. There are a few cringeworthy moments, but all is forgiven by a witty script and good one liners.
