DVD: The Infidel (15)
Friday 06 August 2010
"You find out you're Jewish and suddenly someone in uniform is leading you away," cries Muslim family man Mahmud when he's escorted from an East End town hall, after learning he was adopted from birth and is Jewish.
Mahmud (Omid Djalili) sets about tracing his family history and discovers his birth father, Sonny Shimshillewitz, dying in an old people's home. However, a finicky rabbi (Matt Lucas) won't allow Mahmud access to him unless he studies what it means to be Jewish. A sozzled, foul-mouthed Jewish cabbie (Richard Schiff) gives him a few tips. Scripted by David Baddiel, this broad comedy is blessed with an engaging turn from Djalili and a good heart, but has little visual flair.
