Educating Yorkshire's Musharaf Asghar to lead speech therapy spin-off

The teenager who overcame an acute stammer during Educating Yorkshire is set to lead his own speech therapy spin-off series.

Musharaf Asghar will star in hour-long show Stammer School: Musharaf Finds His Voice for Channel 4 as he helps other children battle their own speech problems.

Scheduled to air on 28 August at 9pm, Asghar hopes the programme will have a “positive impact” and encourage those with stammers “to speak more and not give up on their dreams”.

“Over the last year my confidence has grown and I’m not afraid to speak any more,” he told The Observer. “I just want people to be more aware of stammering.”

David Clews, creator and executive producer, added that watching Asghar in Educating Yorkshire was “incredibly moving”.

The former Thornhill Academy pupil endeared himself to viewers when he defeated his stammer to speak in an assembly. The scene was named TV Moment of the Year by Radio Times.

Asghar’s English teacher Mr Burton had encouraged him to try a technique seen in Oscar-winning film The King’s Speech.

A special GCSE results day episode of Educating Yorkshire will air on Thursday to let viewers catch up on the pupils they came to know, before a third series, Educating the East End, begins a week later.
