United Nations Environment Programme (UNEP) ambassadors supermodel Gisele Bündchen and actor Don Cheadle are going head to head for fans' loyalty in a publicity stunt to raise eco-awareness before World Environment Day (WED) on June 5.
World Environment Day began in 1972 and has been held on June 5 every year since. The event is used by the UN to stimulate political environmental dialogue and encourage individuals around the world to live greener lives.
This year visitors to the Challenge section of the UNEP site ( http://bit.ly/iyY2uX ) can learn more about WED and find a green activity that inspires them. Then in a lighthearted battle for environmentalists' loyalty, visitors have to choose which UNEP ambassador's team they wish to be on - Team Gisele or Team Don.
Having selected their allegiances, visitors can then describe their pledge for positive environmental action and register their intended activity.
Both Brazilian model Gisele and American actor Don Cheadle, of Hotel Rwanda fame, can be followed on Twitter in the leadup to World Environment Day on June 5 via @giseleofficial and @IamDonCheadle.
Whichever team has the most members will be declared the winner on World Environment Day, but both parties have pledged to plant trees for every person that chooses their team.
Gisele, a longtime supporter of humanitarian and environmental causes, who also lent her likeness to eco-cartoon Gisele and the Green Team, is not the only model using her celebrity status to raise awareness of climate change this year. Other famous catwalk faces in the eco movement include Victoria's Secret Angel Miranda Kerr who lent her support to Earth Hour on March 26 and Lily Cole who supports various WWF causes.
