James Cameron's two record-breaking films

James Cameron has directed the two largest-grossing films ever, ‘Avatar’ and ‘Titanic’. Read some of the statistics for the two below:

The two films have separately held the title of the largest-grossing films in the UK. ‘Titanic’, which released in 1997 and took just under £80 million at the UK box office. ‘Avatar’, which was released in 2009 and took nearly £93.5 million across the UK. The films were sitting at one and two in the chart until the latest James Bond film ‘Skyfall’ became the first film to take over £100 million upon release last year - eventually reaching £104 million.

Titanic 3D, which was released in UK cinemas in 2012 made £2.8 million in its first week in UK cinemas and made over £10 million in total. The film made $57 million in the United States (£36.5 million).

In terms of global takings, ‘Avatar’ and ‘Titanic’ have taken an astronomical amount. ‘Avatar’ has taken over $2.7 billion (£1.6 billion), while ‘Titanic’ has taken over $2.1 billion (£1.3 billion).

In terms of Oscars success ‘Titanic’ has ‘Avatar’ beaten hands down. ‘Titanic’ received 14 nominations, which tied it with 1950’s ‘All about Eve’ for the most nominations ever earned by a single film. ‘Titanic’ won 11 Academy Awards, including Best Picture and Best Director, which tied the record for wins set by ‘Ben-Hur’ in 1959 and ‘Lord of the Rings: The Return of the King’ in 2003. In contrast, ‘Avatar’ was nominated for nine Academy Awards, including Best Picture and Best Director, but only won three, including none of the major categories.
