Destiny 2: Sequel is a ‘totally new game’ and will be released for PC, report claims

Some had worried that the game might be more like an expansion, and that it would come out just for consoles once again – but both are incorrect, according to a new report

Destiny 2 is going to be an entirely game and come to an entirely new platform, according to rumours.

Many fans had worried that the sequel to one of the biggest games in recent years would really be just an update, in the same style of the add-ons that developers Bungie have made in the time since the game was released. But it appears that there’ll be at least two huge changes – the game will be fully new, rather than building on the old one, and will come out for PC.

The second rumour comes from the NeoGAF forums, through a user that claimed that Destiny’s next game will come out for PC. He said that a friend works at the publisher, and employees had been told in an internal presentation that the company wouldn’t be limiting the game to the Xbox and PlayStation, as it did in its earlier iteration.

Other details of the forum post chimed with previously unpublished information heard by Kotaku, likely suggesting that it is accurate.

The new game is scheduled for release in 2017. As such, it’s likely that Bungie will drop support for older consoles – the Xbox 360 and PlayStation 3 – and instead make way for playing the game on PC.

And the new game will bring a whole host of new changes, according to people familiar with it.

“D2 is a completely different game,” a person familiar with development told games website Kotaku. “The Taken King was a reboot for Destiny 1 to fix small things. This is the overhaul to fix big things.”

Those will keep the same basic world and mechanics, but will bring with it an entirely new story and new places to explore. As such, it’s unlikely that people will be able to carry over their old games and characters – but that the flipside will be that they’ll get to explore a whole new world.
