California driver gets ticket for wearing Google Glass
Her offence was “driving with monitor visible to driver (Google Glass)”
Wednesday 30 October 2013
If you’re thinking of splashing out on Google Glass when it eventually hits the shelves, you might want to avoid driving while wearing your pair, as a woman in America has found out.
Cecilia Abadie, a so-called Glass Explorer, was given a driving ticket by police in California for wearing her Google Glass while behind the wheel.
According to a photo of the ticket that Ms Abadie posted on Google+, she was officially cautioned for “driving with monitor visible to driver (Google Glass)”.
Part of the caption of the photo reads “Is #GoogleGlass illegal while driving or is this cop wrong?” It appears that, in the UK at least, driving while wearing Google Glass is set to become illegal.
Talking to Stuff, a spokesman for the Department for Transport said: “"We are aware of the impending rollout of Google Glass and are in discussion with the Police to ensure that individuals do not use this technology while driving.”
Back in the US, Google Glass has already been banned from a number of places, including bars, casinos and cinemas, although the search giant recently announced an updated version of the hardware.
