The change could be the end of Space Gray – a conservative colour that seems to have been eclipsed by the more exciting gold and rose gold

The next iPhone might come in blue – and the move might lead it to drop one of its best-known colours.

The classic Space Grey might be swapped in for a deep navy blue, according to Japanese blog Macotara. And the phone’s look has already been mocked up by designers in an attempt to see what it would look like.

Designer Martin Hajek has created renderings of the iPhone 7 based on the new colour as well as other rumours, which include changes to the antenna lines on the back of the phone and the introduction of a dual-lens camera.

Changing the colour would be just the latest bold move on iPhone colours from Apple. With the iPhone 6s it introduced rose gold – which closely followed gold – a move that seemed to signal that it was gradually adding more colours to the iPhone line.

Dropping Space Grey would perhaps be more radical than adding a blue line – marking the first time that Apple has got rid of one of the major colours that it sells the phone in.

Introducing iOS 10

Apple has already offered its iPhone in some variation on black, and the first iPhone only came in the one colour. But the colour has become gradually lighter as time has gone on, and the existing phone is a kind of dark silver.

Now Apple offers its iPhone in silver, Space Gray, gold and rose gold.

Gold and rose gold have eventually come to the iPad, Apple Watch and MacBook, suggesting that any new colours in the iPhone line would probably do the same.
