Mobile phone maker Motorola and mobile phone carrier Verizon Wireless are releasing a special edition R2-D2 Droid smartphone that is sure to get snapped up by
Star Wars lovers across the US.
The highly anticipated, limited edition smartphone, features an Astromech Droid design taken straight out of Star Wars.
To seal the deal the handset comes packaged in a custom "carbonite" box and ships with a Star Wars media dock and wired stereo headset.
For Verizon Wireless customers not lucky enough to get their hands on the R2-D2 Droid, the company is also releasing a new Star Wars Mobile application for smartphones running Android 2.1 and higher. The app, which includes a bounty hunting game, wallpapers and Star Wars themed widgets, is priced at $2.99 in the Android Marketplace.
iPhone users feeling the Star Wars look can also get into the action with a custom made R2-D2-inspired vinyl sticker for their smartphone.
The sticker can be purchased from Etsy user "Shortsleevealliance" here: http://www.etsy.com/listing/57321632/r2d2-iphone-4-sticker-star-wars?ref=sr_gallery_2&ga_search_query=iphone+4&ga_search_type=handmade&ga_page=&order=&includes[0]=tags&includes[1]=title.
The Droid R2-D2 will be available in the US from September 30 for $249 on a two-year contract (after a $100 mail-in rebate).
