Add glamour to your kitchen

We used to call them white goods, because that way everybody knew what we were talking about. Then we used to paint the cupboards around them in bright colours to introduce a bit of style to the kitchen. But if you want to be really fashionable this year, you need to paint the walls and cupboards white and use colour for the appliances.

Mark Scott of Steel Cuisine says: "People are buying kitchens in high-gloss white or black and introducing colour in the form of a brightly coloured cooker."

But you don't have to stop at the cooker; these days you can choose fridges and dishwashers in a rainbow of colours.

Britannia Dynasty cooker

The designer Nina Campbell has turned her attention to the humble cooker. Britannia's Dynasty range (from £4,599) has three patterns to choose from: Deauville, a silvery wave pattern; Damask, black flock designs; and Wisteria, pearlised flowers. All are versions of her fabrics and wallpapers, so you can co-ordinate the cooker with the curtains.

Baumatic Dance Partners dishwasher

This range by Baumatic comes in red, orange or yellow and includes a cooker, washing machine and dishwasher. Prices start at £599 (for the dishwasher).

Ikea Framtid cooker & hood

If Ikea is following the trend, then the chances are that we all will be following it sooner or later. The Swedish retail giant's newest collection of kitchen designs and appliances includes a green combination oven and a matching cooker hood (prices are £495 and £599 respectively).

Genesi range cookers

Choose from red, lime and dark green, although Scott, who starting selling the Genesi coloured ranges in February, says that so far yellow is proving most popular. However, for those people who aren't sure about the bright colours, he does offer a change-of-mind solution: "If someone panics about the colour at any point in the first two years, we will change it back again for £199," he says. So far, only two customers have used this service, although, he points out, two others have gone from stainless steel to colour. Prices start at £1,600.

GE Fusion fridge-freezer

This classic American-style unit comes in 19 colours, although that includes two shades of white for the faint-hearted. Priced at £2,300.

Mini Om Cooker Hood

Too timid for a coloured cooker? Start with an apple green cooker hood, in glass. It's also available in turquoise, yellow or orange (from £1,598). Or try the Goldstream, which looks like a pendant lampshade (£1,999).
