Clydesdale and Yorkshire Banks are launching two new children's savings accounts on Monday.
Jumpstart is an instant-access account for children aged six to 17, with a plastic card offered to 11-year-olds. Headstart is a 95-day notice account which allows parents to save with control passing to a child at 17.
The interest rate – 2.5 per cent – includes a 1 per cent introductory bonus which is snatched away after a year leaving a poor rate.
There are other novelites with the accounts – such as a free watch or earphones – but they do look like an interesting attempt to get kids into savings. However, parents should perhaps seek out the best returns rather than the glitziest deals.
