Radio 3 boss hints at DJ's return

By Matthew Bell

The troubled DJ Andy Kershaw's two-year stint in the wilderness may be about to end after his former boss at the BBC gave a clear signal that he wants him back. In an interview with The Independent on Sunday, Roger Wright, controller of Radio 3, who resuscitated Kershaw's career in 2001, said he would welcome his old friend back on air. "I'm still in touch with Andy and the door is not closed... he's ready. I'm in contact with him."

The Rochdale-born presenter had a weekly world music show on Radio 3 until the summer of 2007, when problems in his private life came to a head. He was arrested and imprisoned in August of that year for breaching a restraining order that prevented him from seeing his ex-partner.

Andy Kershaw is a friend to lots of people who like music. From modern western to world music, he's done more than almost anyone in Britain to introduce new tastes and to widen our horizons. Whole bands and African musicians now have worldwide followings thanks to him.

He's one of our most experienced modern music broadcaster's. The BBC stations have certainly been a lot poorer without him. There's a lot of gloom going around right now economically and politically. Let Andy Kershaw rebuild his life and bring his erudition and more musical joy's back onto the airwaves?

As much as I've enjoyed listening to the programmes broadcast by Charlie Gillett, Mary Ann Kennedy and Lopa Kothari it would be great to hear Andy back doing what he does best - introducing us to lots of wonderful music from around the world. It might also encourage me to go back to the Radio 3 message board in the hope that the anti-Kershaw twits have have moved out in protest!
Oh golly, bring him back quick smart

Too long in exile; I've pinged his old website to the nub. Looking forward to hearing him back on air.
