Astronomy Photographer of the Year 2014 shortlist: The Northern Lights and Milky Way captured in spectacular entries
The competition showcases stunning images from across the globe
Spectacular images depicting phenomena ranging from the aurora borealis at night time to the Milky Way reflected in the Snake River in Wyoming are among just a few to be shortlisted for the Astronomy Photographer of the Year 2014 award.
The competition, which is run by the Royal Observatory Greenwich in association with BBC Sky at Night Magazine, is now in its sixth year and has received over 2,500 entries.
Some of the photographs to be shortlisted include the solar eclipse appearing through steam as the Old Faithful Geyser erupts in Yellowstone National Park, and the heat of the Crescent Nebula glowing in a whirl of red and blue.
Members of the judging panel include space-scientist and TV presenter Dr Maggie Aderin-Pocock, Editor of Sky at Night Magazine Chris Bramley and the Royal Observatory’s Public Astronomer Dr Marek Kukula.
Competition winners will be announced on 17 September and an exhibition of the winning images opens the following day on 18 September at the Royal Observatory.
The exhibition will be free of charge for visitors.
