'Super-collider' tunnel nears completion

The first element of the huge magnet of the Compact Muon Solenoid experimental site at the European Organization for Nuclear Research CERN (Centre Europeen de Recherche Nucleaire) before its lowering in the French village of Cessy near the Swiss city of Geneva, in November 2006

Engineers have fitted the last major piece into what they claim is the world's largest scientific instrument – the nuclear particle accelerator filling a 27km (17-mile) circular tunnel under the Swiss-French border.

"It's exciting, but at the same time there is a feeling of relief," said Robert Aymar, the French director general of the European Organisation for Nuclear Research.

The start-up date for the Large Hadron Collider, which will be used by scientists to study the make-up of matter and the universe, has yet to be set. But Dr Aymar said the €1.3bn (£1bn) project, which has been under construction since 2003, was on target to begin work this summer.

The various chambers in the tunnel – built with the help of more than 20 countries – will join in recording what happens when protons collide at the speed of light. When it is finished, scientists will lower the temperature section by section to near absolute zero – colder than outer space. Thousands of scientists from 80 countries will then use it for experiments.

Explosion imminent

You cannot accelerate matter to the speed of light because theoretically it will have infinite mass at that velocity and before it reaches infinite mass it will reach critical or super-critical mass and explode. This will be a new "bomb ", and will be the annihilation of the proton which will be much more powerful than the binding energy released by fusion or fission or possibly 3x10 (10th) cubed, or 2.7x10 (30th) ergs/gram. Even 1 proton will be too much for the mountain the accelerator is buried under to contain, and it will be followed by the rest of the protons in the speeding bundle. Do not try it in, or around, the Earth or it may end life as we know it. Better safe than not at all.
Proton bomb.

Hello,
I am a student of astrophysics and particle physics and have found a mistake that can cause a disaster. Years ago Einstein and the other scientists of the day theorized that matter could not travel at the speed of light. All agreed. I agree. But where the scientists made a colossal error was in the fact that you can not try to accelerate matter to that velocity, because as it travels it accumulates mass, and at the speed of light it will have infinite mass, but before it reaches infinite mass it will reach critical mass of greater, and explode just like the atomic bomb. This time it will be spontaneous proton annihilation, and the exothermic reaction will be too great for containment. I am asking all my friends to read this and send it to everyone on their e-mail lists and have them send it, too, in an attempt to stop an accident we may never recover from. They should also send it to national geographic, and president Obama of the United States.

Also, it is ludicrous to say that time slows up the faster you travel! The faster you go the slower time goes on? Idiotic!!! If you go fast enough time stops and you stop in your tracks? Anybody that thinks this is even remotely possible does not belong behind the controls of a device capable of destroying the world!!!

To all my friends out there in ciber-space,

Go to the top site, and read it, then send it to the whitehouse...the second site. When you get to the first site take notice that they think it might kill us all!!!!! I have studied particle physics and I say it WILL kill us all, and if not, most of us. We have to stop this accelerator from going on line, and it is due to go on line this year. I'm not sure of the date, but it is sometime this year.

Hurry and get this to everyone on your e-mail list, and have them get it to everyone on their list. This is the only way I can think of to stop the devastation. Asnd it will be devastating. Scientist have been guessing at things they do not know, and so far we've been lucky. But I am 100% positive that these guys don't know what they're doing and they will unleash the power of the proton bomb on an unsuspecting Earth.

Send this whole letter to the whitehouse. Plese! They can call me, or e-mail me, or come and question me. I know for a fact that this is going to blow up and it will be traveling at the speed of light and nothing on Earth can stop it. Pleas send it, This is for real. This is not a joke!

Well this is similar to the photon beams used at the WTC site for NSTAR/IPS and the RHIC using Ar/Xe..shock lamps to jump start the surface wave Pbeams to nucleate the deuterated KDP switches on our modern DWDM OXC modulaters for static cell communications. Study the NYC layout and clock propusion system which by my estimate tunnels neraly 2000 feet under the city "water oasis project 2012"and is approximately 54 miles in overall diameter includind the RHIC and indian point to generate laser confined Quark Gluon Plasma....See project Bioshield

It is my contention that the scientists that are about to do this are possibly miscalculating the ramifications of what this can potentially do. It seems to me that what they are trying to do is scientifically impossible. They can not have any hard science that says they can accelerate mass to the speed of light. If they have the capacity to do this then they should have the common sense to know better. If matter reaches the point of infinite mass and then explodes, even a layman would have to recognize that it will not be good. It will never reach that point anyway, when it reaches critical mass it will probably explode and do a lot of damage to, well, almost everything. Thats just my opinion for what its worth.

I looked in my pants and found a black hole and their was an explosion that hadcome from Uranus. Get a life you end of the world losers. They are taking science to a new level. We may be able to unlock new dimensions and prove incredible theories.

Wow, David Edwin Latasha. You are a Real Genious (sarcastic tone). So we are supposed to believe that you are an "expert" in particle physics because you "studied". Well let me be the first to nominate you to lead up all scientific discovery for the entire world as you problably have the same knowledge of "Particle Physics" as you have masterd the intense science of "Spelling". You sad sad little man. How about this scenario stop sending your little revised comments claiming you know all of the secrets in the unknown universe and you start hoping and praying that the accelerator Does destroy the world as you problably dont have much to live for. Put down the David Blaine correspondence course materials and leave the real science to the real scientists. Douchebag.

Even if it does explode with the magnitude u believe it will still not do the big end of the earth bang u suggest. The amount of material that they are using in the collider just couldn’t reach the levels your suggesting, it wouldn't even dent the walls. If you could 1st learn how not to spam a website and then learn simple GCSE physics (that’s high school level for my American readers) and then stop smoking what-ever it is you smoke you would have a much better grasp of the world in general. They have been colliding Protons and Electrons for a long time at CERN, they have been making positrons (that’s anti-electrons, as in anti matter) there for many years so I’m pretty sure they know what they are doing and know more than you.
