Ex-England footballer Paul Gascoigne charged with two counts of common assault

Former England footballer Paul Gascoigne has been charged with being drunk and disorderly and two counts of common assault in connection with an incident at Stevenage railway station, Hertfordshire, on 4 July, British Transport Police have confirmed.

The former Newcastle United and Tottenham midfielder, who lives in Gateshead, was arrested after officers were called to the station at about 10.30pm and was later released on police bail.

Baljit Ubhey, Chief Crown Prosecutor for Thames and Chiltern Crown Prosecution Service, said: “Following a BTP investigation, a file was forwarded to us to consider whether any criminal charges could be brought against the 46-year-old man."

“Having carefully reviewed all of the available evidence, Thames and Chiltern CPS authorised officers from BTP to charge the man with common assault and being drunk and disorderly.

"The decision to charge was taken in accordance with the Code for Crown Prosecutors."

Mr Gascoigne has been bailed to appear at North East Hertfordshire Magistrates' Court on Monday, 5 August 2013.
