Marine smuggled woman into high-security naval base

A Marine faces disciplinary action after smuggling a woman into a high-security naval base in the boot of his car, the Ministry of Defence said today.

It is understood the serviceman was caught with the female as he escorted her back out of Faslane, the home of the UK's nuclear submarine fleet.

An investigation has been launched following the incident on March 12.

The MoD said the Marine had been interviewed by military police following a report of a "potential breach of security" at the base on the Clyde.

A military spokesman said: "We can confirm a member of the naval service was interviewed by MoD police following a report of a potential breach of security at HMNB Clyde on March 12.

"It's not Navy command policy to divulge personal details.

"The matter is now subject to an internal investigation."

Faslane, about 25 miles from Glasgow, is home to the Trident nuclear weapons system.

Two Navy personnel were detained by police last month after a weapon was discharged at the base.

Officers recovered an air rifle from a room following reports of a shot fired from an accommodation block on February 12.
