Severe delays after man dies in accident that blocks M25 in Surrey
Wednesday 10 April 2013
A serious accident on Britain's busiest motorway led to severe rush-hour delays for drivers today.
The incident, involving a lorry and a car, caused miles of tailbacks on the M25 in Surrey.
At junction 6 near Godstone in Surrey, traffic had to be diverted around the junction via the entry and exit slip roads.
Drivers were warned that journeys around the southern half of the orbital motorway could take as long as two hours 15 minutes.
Surrey Police said a man had died in the accident which happened shortly before 4.30am.
Appealing for witnesses, the force said the collision had occurred on a section of the motorway where roadworks are in place.
The police went on: "Initial reports suggest that a blue Ford Focus had stopped in one of the live lanes with the lights off and that one of the occupants had left the vehicle and was walking along the hard shoulder. The collision has then occurred, with a white Renault lorry colliding with the stationary Ford Focus and further colliding with the pedestrian.
"South East Coast Ambulance Service attended and treated the pedestrian, believed to be a man in his 50s; however, he was pronounced dead shortly after 5am. The other occupant of the Ford Focus, who was still in the vehicle at the time of the collision, has been treated for minor injuries."
Anyone with information is asked to call Surrey Police's collision investigation unit on 01483 639922.
