The Archbishop of Canterbury appeared to come out in favour of creating a legal framework that would have allowed traditionalists to opt out of being administered by women bishops

The Church of England was thrown into disarray last night after its ruling body, the General Synod, rejected a series of amendments by traditionalists opposed to the ordination of women bishops. These included a proposal to create so-called "superbishops" that would have allowed clergy who object to the idea of female bishops to opt out of being administered by them.

A motion reaffirming the Church's commitment to press ahead with the consecration of women bishops was passed late last night after more than six hours of passionate and, at times, bitter debate. The bishops voted in favour of bringing forward legislation to ordain women bishops by 28 to 12. The clergy voted in favour by 124 to 44 and the Laity by 111 to 68.

Virtually all the amendments put forward by traditionalists, which could have provided them with a variety of opt-out clauses, were struck down one by one. Their defeat raises the real possibility of schism within the Church, between those in favour of women bishops and an alliance of traditionalists, Anglo-Catholics and evangelicals who vehemently oppose the idea.

Hundreds of traditionalist clergy have said they may walk out of the Anglican Communion if the Church goes ahead with the consecration of women bishops without providing legal safeguards to protect their beliefs. One bishop was even moved to tears as he berated the Synod for failing to reach a compromise that might have appealed to both camps and keep the increasingly fractured Communion unified.

The Bishop of Dover, Steven Venner, told delegates: "For the first time in my life I feel ashamed. We have talked for hours about wanting to give an honourable place for those who disagree. We have turned down almost every realistic opportunity for those opposed to flourish. And we still talk the talk of being inclusive and generous."

The rejection of the amendments came despite pleas from the Archbishops of Canterbury and York, who both appeared to come out in favour of creating a legal framework that would have allowed traditionalists to opt out of being administered by women bishops – either by joining a non-geographical diocese or being presided over by so-called "superbishops".

Traditionalists reacted angrily to the Synod's decision and accused liberal elements in the Church of using a "scorched earth policy" to force them out. Canon David Houlding, a senior Anglo-Catholic from London said: "It is getting worse. We are going downhill very badly."

One lay delegate even suggested some traditionalists may now consider breaking away from the Church of England to join more conservative or evangelical provinces abroad.

Gender campaigners argue that 15 Anglican provinces – including Canada, New Zealand, Cuba and Australia – have already begun consecrating women bishops and none of them have opted for any form of legal provisions that would create a "church within a church". They believe that super-bishops would create the type of two-tier system for male and females that would be nothing short of legalised discrimination.

Once again we find our selves following man made rules and not those prescribed in the Bible. When will our leaders learn that by pandering to the fads of the day the wrath of the Lord will ultimately decend on those who have turned their backs on His Word. The Old Testament gave us clear examples of this, yet we ignore the obvious. There is nothing more explicit in the Bible concerning the teaching on homosexuality, yet our church leaders turn their backs on the truth in order to pander to the desires of a decadent, immoral society. When will they learn?

The Bible which is suppose to be the bases for our existence is religated to the background as we now allow our self instinct to guide our ways of life. Leaders of the Church should realise that they will give account of their stewardship before God for leading their subjects astray for not interperting the Bible as it is and standing by it, on the pretext of democracy. The Bible is clear on the condition for appointing Bishops and Homosexuality(Sodomy). The old time religion which was practised in the old by the apostles is what we come to know as christianity, which distingushed them.GOD IS NOT MOCKED . For what soever a man sows he shall reap.

wow, I think I'll say it again, you people are fighting over an issue that should be fought by people in the Church that Christ established. You that are a part of the "church of England" or the "Anglican" thing are merely people that are not in the body of Christ, I mean think about it, to be a part of something established after Christ had already secured the Church with his own blood would be a Heresy after all you all have joined something made up hundreds of years after our Lord died for the sins of Man. And to even debate weather a woman can speak at the head of any Church is ridiculous since the rules have already been set by God himself, to argue the point sounds as if you can change Gods laws which of course puts you outside the body, I mean why don't we argue that maybe we can except homosexuals and maybe even worship some other god. Bottom line is God is the creator and we will find out later if we were excepted under our own rules, at least if we made our own.

I thought that this was supposed to be a discussion about the rights and wrongs of women becoming bishops and not a slanging match to see who can upset who and I think it is quite shameful.
It is a very important debate for all believers in Christ because we are either doing his will or going completely against it.
Jesus chose Paul to preach to the early Christian communities. Timothy 2v11 is very clear about a Christian womans role in the church...we may not like it but it is stated for a reason and cannot be misinterpreted and the only option for some people is to treat Paul disparagingly without being able to back this up. Forget "traditionalist"....the bible is the inspired word of God and as such we have no right to change it to fit into todays worldly ways as that would be a complete recipe for disaster.

BOTTOM LINE= If you are not falling in line with Gods word you will not see the Kingdom. So if there are doubts to what anyone is doing, the check list is in the Bible (for all). Some may not even know that they are outside the body fooling themselves. Please check the handbook of life we were all given. If you do not wish to go by that, then happy are you (wink, wink)

Women who decide to become a Bishop should do it for the right purpose...spread the word of God and not for self glory and not just another form of enhancing Women Liberation. Besides being a Bishop does not warrant a pass to Heaven. It is stated in the Bible that it is not by 'works' but by 'grace'....

Hey Ivan, you think on the same lines as me. You have the vision to see the majesty of God and are able to work out grand calculations. I say that all the different factions in Christianity are not a true reflection of Jesus' teachings. They all proclaim to be the true word of God and it's this that leaves all Christians in a quagmire.

I think women should be cherished, respected and looked after by the best of ability of man. Women are more emotional and men are better at cognitive thinking that produces an end result. And I fully agree that by leaving the basic teachings of Christ, and thus, allowing ourselves to branch out and be more liberal, we now find ourselves in this hellish society we live in.

Could you provide me with a good method to study the bible as I've not done much since school but still feel I have innate, natural christian tendencies.

And to the jaffa cake, if you're so sure of yourself then could you please prove your point as I would really like to know.

"There you'll have plenty of time to rant advocating the subjugation of women and murdering of gays and Jews and atheists" - Only a pathetic, unscrupulous God-hating swine resorts to pulling anti-semitism, nazi gas chambers and such, into every discussion of christianity. And regarding the Earth "not being the centre of the Universe", BREAKING NEWS: LIFE HAS NOT BEEN DISCOVERED ANYWHERE ELSE. NOR HAS ANY OTHER FORM OF INTELLIGENT LIFE FOUND US. That pretty much makes it THE centre of the Universe, THE most important tiny little planet in the hugely vast Universe. "You have ABSOLUTELY NO PROOF WHATSOEVER that the bloody book was written by the hands of 'god'" - I have proof. It's just that I can't make a copy and send it to You. Too bad.

Ivan, listen carefully and chew about this: you can keep your plastic 'pearls' for yourself, as they are as FALSE as the stories of your 'book of god'. You have ABSOLUTELY NO PROOF WHATSOEVER that the bloody book was written by the hands of 'god', let alone that it speaks out his/her will. Planet Earth and its creatures were NOT created some 5000 years ago as you book of claptrap solemny declares. Also, this planet is NOT at the centre of the Universe. They're IRREFUTABLE FACTS, come to terms with them.

Please do us a favour: become a monk, bury yourself in a monastery with no modern goodies like the Internet or other 'work-of-the-devil' comfy features. There you'll have plenty of time to rant advocating the subjugation of women and murdering of gays and Jews and atheists and the Flying Spaghetti Monster.

Or you can go the extra mile: pretend to be the new St. Francis and roll yourself in swine dirt. He did it to please the pope, you can do it to please yourself
