Anti-Christmas protesters marched through Tokyo claiming the holiday is just a capitalist ploy that discriminates against singletons.

About 20 protestors, who are members of a Communist-inspired group that protest against western holidays chanted anti-Christmas slogans in Tokyo’s Shibuya district.

The group consisting of mainly single men, who refer to themselves as “Losers with Women,” marched under banners that read “Smash Christmas”. They have previously protested against other holidays including Valentine’s Day.

The head of the organisation, who identified himself by the pseudonym MarkWater, said the anti-Christmas rally was also in support of unloved men.

"In this world, money is extracted from people in love, and happy people support capitalism.

“Unpopular men, who don't have a girlfriend or are not married, are overly discriminated. We want to break this barrier," he told AFP.

Christmas is not a public holiday in Japan but is celebrated informally by couples, while New Year’s Day is seen as a family holiday.
