Eerie new drone footage has been released that shows the remains of an abandoned ex-Soviet military base that once housed Russian nuclear weaponry during the Cold War.

The video captured from the air shows the “ghost” military base in Vogelsang, just north of Berlin, which according to reports from the CIA was the base used to hold nuclear missiles intended for Britain and France.

From the air, a base can be seen that has become overrun with trees, and has seen its 550 buildings neglected and in disrepair.

Also included in the footage are shots of the inside of buildings, which include Soviet newspapers from the time the base was abandoned, discarded clothes and luggage, as well as a number of Soviet posters from the 1980s.

The base was first built in 1951 and quickly became one of the main centres for the USSR’s Western Forces.
