Syrian government forces supported by Iranian troops have made inroads to securing the strategic rebel-controlled highway south of Aleppo.

The progress has been made following heavy Russian air strikes.

The Syrian army is aiming to cut the supply line to rebels in the Idlib province to the north.

Securing the Aleppo-Damascus highway would mark the biggest milestone in the government’s offensive in south Aleppo.

Earlier this week, Russia launched its first submarine missiles against Isis targets in Syria.

Russia's Ministry of Defence have released footage of the first submarine missile strikes which took place on Tuesday.

According to the Russian Defence Minister, Sergei Shoigu, Kalibr cruise missiles were launched from a Rostov-on-Don submarine and successfully hit two “terrorist positions” in Raqqa, about 160 kilometres east of Aleppo.
