Michael McCarthy: Ofcom's judgement failed to address the key question... was this programme accurate?
Tuesday, 22 July 2008
Forget the headlines for a moment. The essence of a matter often lies in the small print, and the most fascinating aspect of the Ofcom judgement on The Great Global Warming Swindle is that the broadcasting regulator declares itself – quite remarkably, one might think – unable to pronounce on whether the contents of the programme were accurate or not.
You have to plough through screeds of type to page 14 to find it, but there it is, in the third paragraph. Ofcom only takes a view on the accuracy of news programmes – Ofcom's italics. It is not required to set accuracy standards for "other types of programming", which, it says, covers Martin Durkin's documentary.
So what the regulator proceeds to do is make a weird judgement, based on its remit for protecting the public from "offensive and harmful material" – what, freak shows? dog-fighting films? – and find that the Durkin programme did not "materially mislead the audience so as to cause harm or offence".
Sounds at first like a victory for the boys at Channel 4, eh? But never mind the harm and offence, did TGGWS mislead the audience or didn't it? That's the point, and it's the point that Ofcom shies away from answering.
For although the issues of fairness and impartiality are of course very important, the essence of the complaints about the programme from many of Britain's senior scientists was about accuracy. They alleged, in enormous detail, and with reams of backup evidence, that what was stated was, in many cases, simply not true. Ofcom has refused them judgement.
The appeal of Durkin's programme to some people, especially on the right, is understandable. One of its core contentions, that global warming has gone from being a scientific theory to a political ideology, is largely true – let's not kid ourselves – and the allegation that dissent is often not tolerated is true also. But it is a world away from that, to proclaiming that the current scientific theory is falsified; and if you are calling people liars, you need to have accurate information on your own side.
Ofcom has at least performed the service of underlining how the programme misrepresented the views of the chief scientist, treated other scientists unfairly and was in breach of the Broadcasting Code with regard to impartiality. But truth matters most of all, and in failing to pronounce on the vital matter of accuracy, Ofcom has given a classic example of a national standard-setting body failing lamentably to live up to what was expected of it.

every thing on this planet pollutes the atmosphere the sea i understand is pumping pockets of methane from the sea bed which no one can control it seems to mention global warming then man is to blame i stand by channel 4/ it pointed out alot of things which i myself did think of before it was broadcasted /goverments have brainwashed us all in the way we live its all a big hype to keep the economy healthy i.e petrol prices/ britain is a tiny tiny island when ministers speak it sort of blaming us as if we are the leading power for world affairs we are not ! we are all doing our part its very complex but its goverment politics to keep prices hyped up and say GLOBAL WARMING SO ITS OK WE SHOULDTOT BE IN THE G8 BRIGADE BRITAIN HAS BECOME THE BIGGEST TAXER COUNTRY IN THE WORLD WE AINT RICH ITS ALL TAX IN THE NAME OF GLOBAL WARMING

It is conceded that the Global warming hypothesis is now not a matter of science, but of political ideology. Political ideologues, by their nature, lean towards totalitarian theories and practice- as some of the more extreme AGW proponents are openly advocating.
The accuracy of global warming proponents and opponents is a fit subject for debate- but far more important to my mind is the question of whether an embryonic totalitarian creed , be it Brown, Black, Red , or Green, represents a much greater menace to civilisation than do the vagaries of Mother Nature.
The history of the past two centuries shows the answer beyond doubt- we have just cause to fear and reject those who would remove our freedoms- whether "for our own good" or "to Save the Planet!"
AGW , if true, according to a UN report in 2005, might kill 166,000 people per year.
This is a paltry figure beside the "achievements" of even the most incompetent of totalitarian regimes..

Yes, the truth does matter: and the truth is, that for a significant number of scientists the "truth" of the IPPC's case is weaker than presented and not supported by unbiased reading of the data. The demonsation of those who disagree into the equivalent of holocaust deniers does the climate change suppoters no favours, and fuels the sense they are unwilling to engage in proper scientific dialogue. Analysis of global weather patterns over a period of several centuries shows a pattern of variability that is not out of true with contemporaneous experience.

I do not want Ofcom deciding on what is accurate and what is not accurate in an on-going controversy. What does Ofcom know about climate change?
Should they be asked to rule on the ACCURACY of your statement last week that the goverment's decision on ivory is "not only reprehensible: it is mad"? (I think you are right, but other might not agree.)
I am happy for them to rule on mis-representation. That is a more a matter of fact than of opinion.

The media promoted view is polemically biased towards the IPCCs political stance!
Opposing views are left with very little funding by comparison - in the US $50Billion on research for AGW as opposed to $20Million for so called dissenters.
31000 scientists also signed a petition of complaint to the US Gov in an attempt to bring an element of fairness to the ongoing debate.
The media has done nothing to balance the views so we hear very little of the role of water in our atmosphere as opposed to CO2, NASA's mistake regarding the warmest day (1932) over the past century, the volcanically active Gakkel ridge which contributes significantly to the arctic summer melts each year,
Omitting the medieval warm period form the hockey stick graph - the list goes on !
Fair discourse has not been allowed and funding issues continue to stifle fair scientific assessment.

I would bet London to a pound, that if Al Gore's science fiction film..."An inconvenient truth' were put to the same test...it would fail the impartiality test as well.
Yet despite the dozens of outrageous lies and distortions of science presented in that film; he (Gore) gets a Nobel Prize, while this film, which is no more or less polemic, gets a brickbat.
As always, the Left seems to completely blind to its own lies.
No wonder Lenin called so many who believed in his message. "useful idiots".

People seem to forget that every living thing on this planet exhudes Co2 24/7. Like elephants and bees, flys etc. And NASA found out that man exhuded 1kg per day. They had to know that for their Mercury/Gemini and Apollo programs.
But there are the animals, native and domestic that exhude as much and more. But the human population is 6.6 billion, ergo 6.6billion kgs/day, x 365 per year is a hell of a lot. Like 2,409 12 like 2,409,000,000,000,000 kgs per day. like 2,409,000,000,000 metric tonnes. At least my calculator tells me thats the number.
Add to that lot the outputs of billions odf domestic animals and Co2 seems to be a bit of a furfy as a reason for global warming.
Funny thing I hear Mars is getting warmer as well. Could it be the sun is hgetting a bit hotter.
There are 1.6 billion cattle at 3kgs per day, sheep, pigs, goats,
you name it they are outputting kgs of Co2 every hour of every day.

Another example of a toothless watchdog failing in its duty.
All the climate change deniers have to do is put on their size 12 wellies, stomp around, and muddy the water. It takes a just few seconds and requires no thought.
It takes rather longer to clean the water up again but by then a few more people have convinced themselves there's nothing to worry about.
Our regional daily paper is full of readers letters parroting the most ridiculous climate change denial myths with no evidence at all to back them up. Composing rebuttals that quote evidence and sources takes hours but it's worth it if only a few of the sceptics are forced to utilise their little grey cells

Just how much do all these job and pension-creating schemes cost the taxpayer... in delivering... er... um...?
