Nicholas Lezard: The challenge of Gail Trimble

The captain of the Corpus Christiteam isn't going to be easy to impress

The intellectual powerhouse that is Gail Trimble, captain of Corpus Christi's all-conquering University Challenge team, has divided the nation like no other figure since Margaret Thatcher. The profound difference is that not only is Ms Trimble demonstrably more knowledgeable than the Iron Lady, she is also, we suspect, a lot nicer.

Such scorn as she has suffered is really about nothing more than the man's fear of the clever woman. Personally speaking, I like clever women, and were I 20 years younger I would be using all the cunning at my command to get her phone number and ask her out on a date.

A date is, conventionally, an arrangement whereby a man sets aside some time to boast about his intellect and achievements to a woman, who then agrees to go to bed with him (or, in my experience, does not, but that's another story).

But a woman who has almost single-handedly hauled her team to glory by knowing a staggering amount of stuff isn't going to be easy to impress. And somehow I suspect that she isn't going to be wowed by extra-intellectual abilities, such as being able to do 1,000 keepy-uppies, balance lumps of sugar on the end of your nose, or do a convincing sound imitation of a cat being chased by a terrier, which are the kind of things that men less cerebrally gifted have traditionally done to woo the woman of their dreams.

No, the man who wins her heart is going to have to do some serious boning up. I would also strongly suggest not going to see a historical film, as Ms Trimble would be able to spot every single anachronism and deviation from accuracy. As she's a classical scholar, I would make a particular point of avoiding something like the film 300, which gets so many things wrong that she'll be in a grump for the rest of the evening.

It's like the old exam problem. Do you try and grasp the big picture, or do you concentrate on a narrow field? I have a hunch that she will probably know that the House of Hapsburg supplied all of the formally elected Holy Roman Emperors between 1452 and 1740, that all non-trivial zeros of the Riemann zeta function have a real part 1/2, whatever that means (thank you, Wikipedia), and that Plenipotentiary won the Derby in 1834. She also would appear to know her history and if you know more state capitals of the US than she does I will come over to your restaurant table and eat my hat in front of you.

What you might have to go for is a plausible semblance of worldly wisdom. University of Life stuff. Anyone can pick up facts if they have spent, as by her own accounts Ms Trimble has, almost all their life reading. But has she worked out, as you have, that life is a meaningless journey in the howling void of eternity towards death, that our names will not live after us, and that if anything can go wrong, it will go wrong?

Oh, wait. She knows Euripides off by heart, and Sophocles, and any other tragedian you can think of. I'd start practicing those keepy-uppies if I were you. Let me know how it goes.

some facts about the university challenge final which are being ignored by the lazy press.
manchester university contestant YEO answered more starters that Trimble. He got 6 starters , she got 5. her team-mates also did well Kay,SCHWARTZMAN and Marsden all got 3 starters correct. It was by no means a one-woman show.

This article started well but I felt it ended up being guilty of the same kind of sneering attitude towards GT as NL criticised in the first place. It fits in to a long tradition of male dismissal of female academics and intellectuals by implying that GT has no sense of humour and has just accumulated information.

In my experience Classicists love updates and adaptations such as 300. I did a PhD in Classics/English and I certainly enjoyed it!

An article which is just a patronising and offensive to an intelligent woman as those whom it supposedly decries.

How about saying that a date with Gail could be interesting, funny and enjoyable in terms of conversation?

But then, why bother at all? She's had her 15 minutes. Let her get on with her life.

Is this article seriously naff? Or trying to be a spoof? The tone is extraordinarily old-fashioned, boys' public schoolish ideas about dating/wooing the opposite sex! Even if it's trying to be mischievous / naughty / humorous / clever ... sorry, wasted on this reader. And when I reached 'is going to have to do some serious boning up', I really thought Nicholas Lezard had lost his marbles! This young woman certainly casts a powerful spell over certain of the male species.

Enyrb, quite right that the final was not a one woman show as all of the contestants on both sides contributed. However the fuss with Gail relates to her impact throughout the series which was, by any standard, phenomenal.

Gail Trimble is hands down one of the best quizzers of her generation. As a member of the Oxford Quiz Society, and a frequent competitor at the Oxford Inter-College Quiz (which often serves as a fore-runner and training ground for University Challenge), I had a chance to experience Gail's prowess first hand. This was particularly the case when I captained the Trinity College team in 2005 only to be annihilated by Corpus (captained by Trimble with Schwartzmann on the team) in the Second Round though to be fair one of my team mates didn't show for the match. I am not surprised in the least that she has done so amazingly well on University Challenge. I am surprised at all the fuss.

All of this does smack of sexism, no least because quizzing is often such a male dominated sport. Not that this hasn't all happened before. Many years ago, another outstanding female quizzer on UC suffered similar media attention, even being offered a chance to pose for Playboy (Gail was offered a tasteful photo shoot in Nuts, if there can be any such thing). One wonders why there is a lot less fuss at other outstanding male quizzers who have similarly done fantastically well on UC, the most recent example that springs to mind is Gareth Aubrey from last year's Manchester team.

As for asking Gail out on a date, she's got a boyfriend whom she is happily attached to. And after witnessing her blitzing starter questions on many an occasion, the thought did cross my mind.

I can't help thinking the word "intellectual" is being bandied about very loosely in relation to Gail Trimble, and UC contestants in general. An intellectual is a creative and critical thinker - a person possessed not only of wide general knowledge but the ability to come up with valuable new perspectives and important ideas. Nothing like this is tested on quiz shows like UC. It's all about breadth of reading and, most importantly, speed of recall. It's this rather shallow fact-filing propensity that inspires the "know-it-all" put-downs, but that's an inevitable part of audience response to quiz shows of this kind. It doesn't make them any less popular.

Any quiz is merely a test of memory and recall. She is very pretty though!

oh no no no: surely the tone of this article is supposed to be light and self deprecating, and conversely, appreciative of her. I find it very reassuring to hear a man who is able to be flippant about the rigmarole men go through to perform on dates- were I twenty years older I would send him an email and ask him to ask me out.

Of course she could enjoy a classical adaptation- why are women so ready to find disrespect when it just isn't there?

I have been very impressed by her quizzing prowess but she does remind me very much of Sally Smedley from the comedy series 'Drop the Dead Donkey'
