Lynch pinches cross-country title
The American runner Nneena Lynch won the English National Cross Country Championship in Newark yesterday, edging out the British national champion Alison Wyeth in a winning time of 21 min 54 sec for the 3.75 mile course. The 24-year-old New Yorker, a graduate student in anthropology at Oxford University, was third in the recent US cross-country trials and secured a spot on the American team for the world championships, which are to be held in South Africa on 23 March. Lynch and Wyeth ran stride for stride until the American pulled away in the final 300 yards with a strong finishing kick. Wyeth finished in 21:59 and Britain's Angie Hulley was third in 22:03.
