Royal interest in the Shell-sponsored National Schools Sevens at Rosslyn Park ended swiftly yesterday as Bryanston won their second festival tournament title, beating Cheltenham 26-14 in the final, writes Paul Morgan.

Gordonstoun, with the Princess Royal's son Peter Phillips in their line- up, bowed out in the last 32 as Bryanston, the former school of England international Phil de Glanville, powered home, inspired by their sniping half-back Paddy Grant-Sturgess.

His finest moment came in the semi-final against last year's winners, Wellington, when he scored a hat-trick after Bryanston were 26-10 down with five minutes left. Grant-Sturgess hauled his side back into the match and it was left to Ed Hallett, son of the watching RFU secretary, Tony Hallett, to dive over in the last seconds to clinch an amazing 27-26 victory.
