Shot of the day

Jonathan Trott’s improbably sumptuous cover drive for four off Peter Siddle took him to 49 with the promise of many more to come. But in the very next over he was out.

Ball of the day

Alastair Cook looked safe in shouldering arms to a ball from Jackson Bird which pitched outside off and should have gone on in that direction. It jagged back off the pitch and he was given out plumb lbw.

Daft idea of the day

Kevin Pietersen’s quick single off the last ball of an over to keep strike was poorly judged. If David Warner’s throw had hit, Alastair Cook at the other end would have been yards out.

Moment of the day

When Joe Root was given not out caught behind, Australia asked for a review. The short wait for Hot Spot was nerve-jangling but a mark showed on his bat and Root was on his way.
