England supporters were daring to dream as their team set off in pursuit of an all-time national-record run chase to complete an astounding reversal of fortune in Adelaide.

James Anderson's maiden five-wicket haul in Australia, and four from Chris Woakes, helped Joe Root's men bowl their hosts out for 138 by tea on day four to give themselves a highly-improbable victory target of 354 in this inaugural pink-ball Ashes Test.

Craig Overton claimed the final wicket, having Josh Hazlewood caught by Dawid Malan to dismiss Australia for their lowest total in Adelaide since 1955.

Mark Stoneman and Alastair Cook then took England to 38 without loss after 10 overs of their second innings, although England still needed 316 more runs across the remaining day-and-a-half to secure an unlikely victory.

Australia, who completely dominated the first two-and-a-half days of this second Test, nonetheless remained overwhelming favourites to go 2-0 up with three to play, given England have not got within 100 runs of any target over 350 that they have been set in the last decade.
