Arsenal are planning a summer swoop for Swansea captain Ashley Williams, according to reports.

It's claimed Arsene Wenger has grown frustrated with his current back-line and sees the Wales defender as the perfect addition.

At the weekend, Arsenal's current pairing of Thomas Vermaelen and Per Mertesacker were criticised for their roles in Tottenham's two goals as the Gunners lost the north London derby.

According to the report, Williams' leadership skills and organisation have been identified as the perfect remedy for Arsenal's leaky defence.

Williams is contracted to the Capital One Cup winners until 2015 and it is understood it would take a bid in the region of £8m to prise him away from the Liberty Stadium.

Liverpool have also been mentioned as another possible suitor, a transfer which would see Williams link up once more with Brendan Rodgers. The retirement of Jamie Carragher and uncertainty over the future of Daniel Agger mean the Anfield club will be on the look out for a new central defender in the summer.
