Jay Rodriguez to Tottenham: Spurs improve £14m plus Andros Townsend offer in final attempt to secure deadline day signing

Spurs want to sign the injured England forward this summer with the belief that a number of clubs will rival them for his signature in January

Tottenham Hotspur have today raised their offer for the injured Southampton striker Jay Rodriguez above the original £14m – a deal which includes the transfer of Andros Townsend to Saints.

So far, Southampton have refused any bid for Rodriguez, even with Townsend included as part of it. For his part, Townsend, who trained this morning with the England squad, is understood to be eager to go and wants the move.

Signing Rodriguez has become one of Spurs’ priorities this transfer deadline day with manager Mauricio Pochettino having identified his former player as one of his top transfer targets. The ultimate decision on Rodriguez’s future will rest with Les Reed, Southampton’s executive director, and the club’s newly appointed chief executive Gareth Rogers.

Rodriguez ruptured his cruciate ligaments in April and is not expected back in action until the end of October.

However, he has less than two years left on his deal and Spurs believe that if they do not get him today then the competition for his signature will be that much the greater in January. Rodriguez’s homegrown status makes him attractive to the leading Premier League clubs.
