Darren Campbell announced his retirement last night after winning a low-key 100 metres event at Grangemouth. The 32-year-old, who had been due to end his career after the relay at the Norwich Union International at Birmingham this weekend, called time earlier on a career that has seen him take medals in every major championship.

The Olympic relay gold medallist refused to join in a lap of honour after the British 4 x 100m relay win in the European Championships in Gothenburg last Sunday, as a protest at the inclusion of Dwain Chambers, who had returned from a two-year doping ban.

The two were named in an eight-man relay squad to form two teams this weekend.
