Chester Jets begin their defence of the National Cup against Scottish Rocks in Glasgow tonight, with their hopes resting on the 38-year-old former international, Dave Gardner, a temporary replacement for the absent American John McCord.

McCord is in New York as best man at his brother's wedding, forcing coach Robbie Peers to ask Gardner, a 6ft 8in police inspector, to 'de-retire' for the weekend. "Dave knows what's expected and he brings valuable veteran leadership," Peers said.

There are two other all-BBL clashes with three-times winners Sheffield Sharks at home to Newcastle Eagles tonight. Both clubs opened the season with two BBL wins last weekend. Milton Keynes Lions are at home to London Towers in a delayed tie being played two weeks tomorrow.

Essex Leopards booked their place in the quarter-finals with a 102-73 win at National League Conference side Kingston Wildcats on Thursday night.
