Trending: The 'oof' word – when charity gets nasty

Forget the antics of Joey Barton, the toughest footballers these days are to be found playing in charity games. It's something that Gordon Ramsay discovered at the weekend, after he was floored by Teddy Sheringham during the Soccer Aid event at Old Trafford.

Sheringham's affectionate tap on Ramsay's face did little to revive the chef, who had to be carried from the field and to a hospital.

Such tackles aren't confined for former pros, however. Boris Johnson showed that during a 2006 match, when he launched into German midfielder Maurizio Gaudino, head-first as though he was still galloping through the playing fields of Eton. Last year, Alastair Campbell became embroiled in a melee between his son and boyband The Wanted during a game in Burnley after he was subject to a few crunching tackles.

Despite the ugliness, Sunday's Soccer Aid did also produce another thing of great quality – a wonder goal from Kasabian guitarist Serge Pizzorno, who chipped David Seaman to the delight of the crowd.
