Irish call up Danaher

The former Irish captain, Philip Danaher, is to replace the injured full-back Jim Staples for the remainder of the World Cup. Staples broke a bone in his hand during the 43-19 defeat by New Zealand on Saturday.

Danaher, a centre, was originally unavailable for the tournament but agreed to fly out after a telephone call from manager Noel Murphy.

Troy Coker, the Australian No 8, pulled a hamstring during training yesterday and could be out for the remainder of the tournament, according to his coach, Bob Dwyer.

He will definitely miss Wednesday's Group A match against Canada in Port Elizabeth, when his place will be taken by Tim Gavin. It is the latest in a run of injuries for the utility forward, who played in the two previous World Cups.

Dwyer said a decision on a possible replacement would only be made later. "We are not yet sure about the extent of the injury. He'll definitely not train for at least a week and it might be even longer. It's a big loss for us and a big disappointment for Troy and consequently the team too," Dwyer said.

Tonga will not appeal against the expulsion of flanker Feleti Mahoni from the tournament.
