Morath's kicking keeps Tonga alive

Tonga beat Japan 31-18 in an error-ridden match yesterday to keep alive their slim hopes of reaching the quarter-finals for the first time.

Both sides ran in three tries but it was the kicking of fly-half Kurt Morath, who scored 16 points, that proved the difference against the Pacific Nations champions. Tonga must now beat France in their final game with a bonus point and hope the French lose heavily to New Zealand on Saturday to qualify.
