Roger Federer sets up London date with straight-sets victory at Paris Masters
Wednesday 30 October 2013
Roger Federer booked his place at next month's season-ending ATP Tour Finals in London with a straight-sets victory over South African Kevin Anderson in the Paris Masters.
Federer came through 6-4, 6-4 to set up a third round meeting with Germany's Philipp Kohlschreiber, who had earlier beaten 11th seed Tommy Haas to progress. With his qualification for the eight-man tournament at London's O2 Arena assured, the Swiss will now try to win the event for a record seventh time.
Earlier, compatriot Stanislas Wawrinka kept his hopes of qualifying for the first time, after a battling 6-3, 3-6, 6-3 victory over Spain's Feliciano Lopez. Wawrinka served 19 aces and prevailed in under two hours at Bercy, but had to make a quick recovery after a losing the second set.
Wawrinka started the week eighth in the ATP Race to London, with his victory meaning the Spaniard Nicolas Almagro misses out. Two places are still available, with Nadal, Novak Djokovic, David Ferrer, Juan Martin del Potro, Federer and Tomas Berdych having already qualified.
