Educated opinion – The University of Brighton
Thursday 02 April 2009
In 1970 the Brighton College of Technology and School of Art merged to form Brighton Polytechnic, which in 1992 became the University of Brighton, an institution described by its students and staff as a “centre of creativity”. Brighton is home to over 20,000 students on higher education courses and encourages the balance between a healthy social life and hard work.
Spread over five campuses in Brighton, Eastbourne and Hastings, the university is a fairly modern institute. Although we do not hold claim to a collection of beautiful buildings to lure in prospective new students, we do have one precious asset; the town itself, also known as “London by the sea”. It’s fantastically diverse town right beside the sea and packed to the gills with artists, writers and other creative types, which gives the town a unique flavour. That’s not to mention the countless bars and pubs to visit, most of which are equipped with a variety of student deals.
Across town, Brighton has 12 halls of residences in four different locations; Phoenix Halls is the closest to town and arguably the one most students will put down as their first choice. The university also has a fantastic art and design department where students are competing to claim a place on both undergraduate and postgraduate courses, offering students invaluable experience that will help them on their way to a valued career. The art department also contributes to the largely diverse set of art students who walk the town, adding to Brighton’s cosmopolitan ambience.
The university also runs an award-winning initiative called the Community University Partnership Programme. The programme seeks to reduce social inequalities in communities local to the university and last year won the Outstanding Contribution to the Local Community award at the Times Higher Education Awards 2008.
So, Brighton is an institution that thrives upon quirky individuals willing to succeed and share their creative passions with fellow Brightonians. With an atmosphere in Brighton that is largely created by students, this is a fun and care-free city where you will feel very welcome.
