Henrik Stenson surged five strokes clear of the field with a course record-tying 63 in the Sun City Challenge first round here yesterday. The big-hitting Swede was in impressive form, combining accurate tee shots with precision putting at the Gary Player Country Club to fire his nine-under-par score and equal the record set by Ernie Els in the final round of the 2002 event.

Brendan Jones is hoping victory in the World Cup with his team-mate Richard Green here today might bring the pair some attention back home in Australia. The unheralded partnership shot a nine-under-par 63 yesterday to draw level with Spain's Miguel Angel Jimenez and Pablo Larrazabal, four shots clear of the rest of the 28-team field.

The biggest win of Graeme McDowell's career, secured here yesterday on the sort of madcap final day that has been a feature of recent Scottish Opens, will boost his bank account by a cool half-million quid. Yet the cash was a secondary consideration as the 28-year-old Northern Irishman sank his final par putt on a glorious Argyll afternoon. Of utmost value is the virtual certainty that he will represent Europe in his first Ryder Cup in September.

As challengers rose and then promptly fell straight back down again, it seemed as if they could not give this famous trophy away. But then poor Oliver Wilson did just that. He had a seven-footer to win the BMW PGA Championship and although it was not quite John Terry in golf spikes, it was heart-breaking for the young Englishman all the same.

Justin Rose has been here before. Indeed the great hope of England has now remarkably been here the last three times he has played the Masters. At the head of the leaderboard after the first round of the year's first major and seemingly in the form of his life. For 2004 and 2007 read 2008. Except this time Rose is determined the tale will not be tinged in anti-climax.

It has already developed into Australia versus Tiger Woods here at the WGC CA Championship in Miami, but even that nation of shrinking violets may not be bullish about their chances this weekend. Geoff Ogilvy and Adam Scott are no mugs, but then you do not necessarily need to be for Woods to make you look like one.

Martin Kaymer, the European Tour Rookie of the Year, carded an impressive six-under-par 66 to hold a one-stroke lead over Henrik Stenson following the first round of the Abu Dhabi Golf Championship here yesterday.

Hillary Clinton's weekend visit to the key primary state of New Hampshire has made one thing clear - her vote in 2002 to authorise the Iraq war will be the biggest obstacle to her winning the Democratic presidential nomination.
