It’s showtime again in LA as the world’s highest-priced sports team are closing in on their first appearance in the World Series for 25 years

Baseball: Sosa level in home run race

WITH JUST a handful of games left to play, the race for the record number of home runs in a season took a startling turn last night as Sammy Sosa drew level with Mark McGwire, writes Andrew Marshall in Washington.

Baseball: Yankees close in on all-time wins record

THE NEW York Yankees are just one win away from breaking a club record which has stood for 71 years after sweeping both games of a double- header with the Central Division champions, the Cleveland Indians, on Tuesday. They won their 108th and 109th matches of the season to stand within one victory of the 1927 Yankees record of 110 wins.

Baseball: Ripken's home run ends at 2,632 games

NOTHING IN baseball is eternal. Not Roger Maris' home run record, pulverised in 1998 by Mark McGwire and Sammy Sosa. Not the failure of the hapless Chicago Cubs to put together a winning team (they might even make the play-offs this year). And now not even the Ripken streak.

Baseball: McGwire moves one up on Sosa

MARK McGWIRE, the St Louis Cardinals slugger, hit his 63rd home run of the season on Tuesday night, extending the all-time record and pulling one ahead of Chicago Cubs' Sammy Sosa.

Baseball: McGwire expands his record collection

MARK McGWIRE put his name in the record books yet again when the St Louis Cardinals scored seven times in the fifth innings to edge the Cincinnati Reds 8-7. McGwire drew two walks to match Barry Bonds' 1996 National League record of 151 in a season. But he also struck out twice and popped to first, finishing just 3 for 28 with a homer and two RBIs against Cincinnati pitching during this season.

BASEBALL: Homer unites America

WHEN IT came, the home run that broke the US record was hard, fast and so low that it seemed at first it might not make it over the fence. But, so much energy did Mark McGwire put into the shot, it would probably have punched a hole through in any case.

Baseball: Fan puts McGwire homer in $1m class

MIKE DAVIDSON of St Louis will not accept even $1 million (pounds 0.6m) for the ball that Cardinals' Mark McGwire equalled Roger Maris' single-season home run record in the 3-2 victory over the Chicago Cubs at Busch Stadium on Monday.

One man's obsession to beat the world of sport into submission

RUPERT MURDOCH'S pounds 575m bid for Manchester United, the world's most valuable sporting name, is confirmation that the tycoon's business plan has moved from owning the television rights to sport to controlling sport itself.

Baseball; McGwire and Sosa set to make history

THROUGHOUT THE season they have tracked each other. Tonight Mark McGwire, of the St. Louis Cardinals, and the Chicago Cubs' Sammy Sosa go head-to- head in a two-game series which could witness the demise of the most famous record in American sport.

Baseball: Record still on for slugger Sosa

BASEBALL: McGwire barrage edges towards record

MARK McGWIRE slugged his way to the brink of immortality on Wednesday night, striking two home runs to move within two of Roger Maris' 37- year-old Major League record.

Baseball: Home run history for McGwire

MARK McGWIRE became the first National League player in 49 years to hit 54 home runs in a season when he sent a pitch from Justin Speier over the centre-field wall in the eighth inning of the St Louis Cardinals' 7-6 home defeat by the Floria Marlins on Wednesday night.

Baseball: McGwire's gain eclipsed by Mets

MARK McGWIRE, of St Louis, regained pole position in the major league home run standings but the New York Mets took over the lead in the National League wild-card race with an 8-3 win over the Cardinals on Tuesday.
