The first formally organised motor race, between Paris and Rouen in 1894, was won by a De Dion steam tractor. The organisers promptly demoted it in favour of a petrol-engined Peugeot, and since then the sport has had the air of making up rules as it goes along.

Peugeot has given the clearest indications yet of the design direction it will take under its new styling chief, Gilles Vidal, who was appointed last month with the release of a redrawn version of its famous “lion” badge and the first pictures of its lithe new SR1 concept car.

Peugeot has appointed Gilles Vidal as its new Design Director from 4 January 2010. Vidal, 37, who joined the French manufacturer in 1996, has been working on a new identity for Peugeot, which is expected to be unveiled in January.

PSA Peugeot Citroën is in talks with Japan's Mitsubishi Motors Company in a move that could lead to full-blown "strategic alliance".

Peugeot has started taking what it describes as pre-reservations for its i0n electric car, which is expected to be introduced at the end of 2010. Although private customers can register their interest, it seems that the i0n is initially being aimed mainly at company and local government fleets.

This is the RCZ, Peugeot's answer – although they wouldn't thank you for saying it – to Audi's successful TT sports car. The RCZ was formally launched at the Frankfurt Motor Show, but most British buyers will get their first chance to see it at the forthcoming MPH Show, a sort of car circus or variety event that takes place at Earls Court between November 5 and 8.

Mitsubishi's four-door electric car is no longer just a design study or a prototype – the company has just announced that by the end of August, it had delivered 387 units to companies and local authorities in Japan. Sales to individuals won't begin until April next year, but a number of pre-orders have already been received.

Peugeot has introduced two new diesel engines for its 407 Coupe. Both are fitted with particulate emissions filters (PEFs) - a technology heavily promoted by the French manufacturers before others took it up, although the engines are joint developments between Peugeot and Ford.
