Quentin Tarantino, the director who has made us cover our eyes during the goriest sequences of his films like Pulp Fiction, Kill Bill and Reservoir Dogs is apparently a little squeamish himself when it comes to sound effects, especially those that are, as he puts it, "blood-curdling" and "pterodactyl-like".

Tura Satana: Amazonian star of Russ Meyer’s cult classic film ‘Faster, Pussycat! Kill! Kill!’
Thursday 10 February 2011
The maverick director John Waters might have been exaggerating slightly when he called Russ Meyer's 1965 cult classic Faster, Pussycat! Kill! Kill! "the greatest film ever made", but it has certainly become one of the most referenced movies of all time, and is now a touchstone of popular culture. Vaughan Arnell paid homage to it when he directed the Spice Girls' video for "Say You'll Be There", the group's second No 1 single, in 1996, and Anton Corbijn also riffed on it when he filmed a clip for "All These Things That I've Done" by the Las Vegas band The Killers in 2004.

What makes a cult film? It's a question to get cinephiles spluttering over their popcorn. Should the definition be confined to the midnight-movie set that embraced El Topo and The Rocky Horror Picture Show in the 1970s, or do films such as John Hughes Breakfast Club count?

The cult film beloved of Quentin Tarantino is re-released uncut on DVD. Shogun Assassin was spliced together for the Western market in 1980 from two films from the Japanese Lone Wolf and Cub series, but was banned in the UK in 1983; a badge of pride when it was released in 2001.
