The invitation to the show was a plastic polar bear and the entry card called for the species to be saved, so it was of little surprise that the hottest ticket at the ready-to-wear shows in Paris came with an environmental message too.

Ready To Wear: When it comes to luxury wool, fashion has upped the ante

It should come as no great surprise that just as cashmere – once a highly elitist (read prohibitively expensive) yarn – becomes accessible to the many as opposed to the privileged few, fashion ups the ante.

Great strides: Trousers back in the style spotlight

No longer overshadowed by dresses or denim, trousers have stepped back into the style spotlight for autumn. Carola Long reports on a trend that's set to run wild

Outside Edge (18/07/10)

Given the antics of professional golfers, it's no surprise to learn that playing a round is the third most popular excuse for male love cheats, according to IllicitEncounters.com, who specialise in arranging extra-marital affairs: 13.8 per cent like a bit of rough because you can play on your own and thus avoid the need to provide an alibi. A story of love and death is emerging in Belo Horizonte, Brazil where Bruno Fernandes, goalkeeper for champions Flamengo, is accused of plotting to murder his girlfriend Eliza Samudio after she had his child against his wishes. His cousin claims he saw her being killed by a former policeman, then her body was fed to rottweilers. Police are looking for leads.

Carola Long: 'The fashion world loves Stella McCartney’s Seventies mum look – it’s the cheats way to do summer'

Why has the fashion world got so excited about Stella McCartney's "Seventies mum look", complete with denim skirt and sensible cork sandals? Because it's easy. It's the cheat's way to do summer. Such a demure ensemble offers a lifeline for anyone who considers the flesh exposure of plunging maxis and playsuits about as dignified as streaking at the World Cup.

Carola Long: 'I'm very evangelical about my latest natural skin care discovery'

Until recently, I wasn't particularly zealous about green beauty products – be that organic, biodynamic or just free of certain chemicals. Natural skincare brands and devotees tend to question why people pay more attention to what they put into their bodies than on to their skin, but I've put plenty of burgers and booze into my system over the years, so it seemed pointless to stress over a few preservatives.

Hit & Run: Snotty nose, cashmere leggings

They look good on the uber-trendy child models in the ad campaign, and you know they'd look good on your offspring, too. As of yesterday morning, any pampered kid aged between the ages of 0 and 10 can work their new look from Stella McCartney – or more specifically, Stella McCartney for GapKids and BabyGap – while sipping their babyccinos. It's another coup for Gap, which has a successful history of bringing designers like Pierre Hardy and Roland Mouret on board to give their adult clothing some cutting edge. And when Hit & Run frisked the rails at 8am when the first collection hit stores yesterday morning, it looked like Stella had scored the chain yet another hit. She's designed exactly the sort of retro-cool clothes that will appeal to the adults buying the clothes.
