Stella McCartney kicked off proceedings at the Paris collections yesterday with a show that appeared to reference childhood memories of her mother's wardrobe with easy denim separates, fine-gauge knitwear and relaxed tailoring in summery shades straight out of the 1970s.

While the Labour Party's promise of "special VIP" attendances at this week's conference might have been something of an exaggeration, organisers still managed to impress by convincing Lesley Garrett and Jo Brand to provide the entertainment for Tuesday's gala dinner in Brighton. There was one big name, though, who was conspicuous by his absence.

What are you wearing right now?
A silk maxi-dress by Maje with a studded Acne denim jacket (that I just cut the sleeves off) and gladiator sandals. Accessories-wise, I'm busting a plaited headband, an Annina Vogel charm necklace and tons of random bangles. I think I'm having a Stevie-Nicks-meets-the-Hell's-Angels moment!

The home I grew up in ... was my grandmother's house. It was on a red brick road in Akron, Ohio. One day city planners put the house on rollers and moved it up the hill. They put in a super highway where my home had been, and destroyed the town.

I have as little time for the Home Secretary, Jacqui Smith, as for the rest of this crumbling Labour government – actually maybe even a little less, since she is in charge of the terrifying erosion of our liberties that is going on under the watchful gaze of six million CCTV cameras.
