LETTER:The red flag still flies in Islington

From Mr Julian Glover

Sir: Islington council's decision to raise the European Union flag on VE Day is to be welcomed, but Andrew Grant-Adamson (letter, 15 May) should not assume that the "blueing" of Labour is complete. Clause IV may have gone, but the Labour majority on Tony Blair's local council keeps the red flag flying when in session - and plans to do so for a good while yet, if its recent purchase of a new banner is any indication.

Mr Blair has apparently not objected to his council tax being spent in this way. But one wonders whether he would be as tolerant if the Conservative majority in Parliament used public funds to fly its party flag from Big Ben?

Yours faithfully,
