It’s the news that fans have been waiting for since 2004 and now, Carl Barat seems to have confirmed rumours that The Libertines are to reunite.

Speculation was first sparked over the weekend when frontman Pete Doherty hinted in an interview that he had been approached with an offer for a big gig.

Shortly afterwards, a picture of London’s Hyde Park emerged on the band’s official Facebook page. The Libertines’ management has been pointing reporters towards the photo when asked for comment.

On Sunday night, Barat put the gossip mill into overdrive by reportedly telling Gigslutz that an imminent reunion was “very much a possibility” and that fans should “keep the 5th July free”.

Official confirmation has yet to come but as Barat has named a date, clearly there is at least some reason to be excited, right?

“Not long ago I listened to The Libertines songs on YouTube and had a burst of nostalgia so I said what the heck,” Doherty told Israeli newspaper Ynet. “Then they told me how much they will pay us and I cannot lie to you I couldn’t say no, at least not in my state right now.”

The band, whose hits include "Can't Stand Me Now" and "Don't Look Back Into The Sun", last played live together at the Reading and Leeds festivals in 2010.
