The international Artexpo bills itself as the world's largest fine art trade show. The event hopes to attract in excess of 10,000 buyers and art enthusiasts, all coming to view and purchase wholesale works directly from artists and publishers. In addition to the large showcase of prints, paintings, drawings, sculptures, photography and ceramics, Artexpo also hosts a special three-day Education Series.

Art Paris bends the rules of traditional art fairs by creating an event that is centered around contemporary art projects rather than the traditional art fair booth model. Participating galleries co-organize projects with other local and international participants, creating a cacophony of thematic works that extend past the barriers of the traditional art fair set-up. The artworks revel around strong creative ideas, fusing mediums such as painting, sculpture, drawing, video, performance and installation with architecture, design, fashion, gastronomy, literature and cinema. In 2011 there are 120 galleries exhibiting works and more than 48,000 visitors are expected to attend. Other notable art fairs taking place in Paris in 2011 include Le Salon D'Automne (October 12-16), FIAC (October 20-23), Cutlog (October 20-23) and Paris Photo (November 9-13).

Art Fair Tokyo is a broad-ranging art fair that encompasses contemporary and modern art as well as more traditional Japanese art forms such as nihonga (Japanese-style paintings) and ukiyoe (Japanese woodblock art). The event drew a record crowd of 50,000 visitors in 2010. The Fair's motto is "art is something to buy, not just something to look at." More than 130 galleries will showcase works made by local and international artists. Art Fair Tokyo will be held concurrently with exhibitions at several art museums and art projects in the greater Tokyo area as part of Tokyo Art Week (March 26 - April 3).

Hamburg's cinemas and exhibition halls will be transformed into an international meeting place for film and photography buffs in April. The city will be awash with more than 100 exhibitions, screenings, lectures, and films by and about photographers focusing on this year's theme, "Crossing Boundaries. Photo-Film-Photo." The last edition of the event attracted around 250,000 visitors. Leading photography events around the globe include the CONTACT Photography Festival in Canada (May), Paris Photo in France (November 9-13) and FotoFest in the US (March 16 - April 29, 2012).

Hailed as the world's oldest international art fair, Art Cologne is all about "looking at art, discovering art, buying art." Art Cologne is the most prominent contemporary art fair in Germany and is a must-see event in Germany's art calendar along with Art.Fair 21, Art Forum Berlin, and the Fine Art Fair Frankfurt. Roughly 60,000 people are expected to attend Art Cologne in 2011.

Archibald, Wynne & Sulman Prizes

The Archibald Prize is one of Australia's oldest and most prestigious art awards. Since its inception in 1921 the prize has been awarded to some of Australia's most important artists, including George Lambert, William Dobell and Brett Whiteley. Each year the Art Gallery of NSW holds an exhibition to showcase Archibald Prize entries. The Art Gallery of NSW also displays landscape paintings in oil or watercolor and figure sculptures submitted for the Wynne Prize plus genre paintings, subject paintings and mural projects in the running to win the Sir John Sulman Prize.
