Fast work: the President is hardly into his first spat before this souvenir portfolio of pictures from the campaign trail. It's hard to remember that at the outset Clinton was, as the book puts it, 'an unknown candidate running against an unbeatable President'. The photographs are cheerful and flattering; they hardly ever attempt to catch Clinton in an unguarded moment - except for one rather brilliant shot of him standing morose and pudgy at one end of a table tennis court, while Hillary lashes out with an impressive forehand smash. There's a striking back-of-the-plane hand-holding moment, too, in which the first marriage briefly and touchingly retreats into itself. Otherwise, the man jogs, plays the saxaphone, shakes hands, smiles, and keeps his big glasses out of sight.
