The Ten Best History Books

Chosen by Jamie Merrill

Necropolis: London and Its Dead By Catharine Arnold From burial mounds to charnel houses, the capital's first crematoriumto the black crepe and floral tributes of East End memorials, Catharine Arnold's account of death in London is by turns fascinating, stomachchurning and poignant. She is especially good on the endlessly over-the-top Victorian funeral business. Price: £7.99 (Pocket Books)

Seems foolish to compile a top ten list of history books without mention of Winston Churchill, Barbara Tuchman, Lytton Strachey Alan Moorehead. All great linguistic stylists as well as superb storytellers. What about Daniel Yergin's still relevant history of the oil industry, "The Prize"? Why not compile the top 100 histories no educated person should miss?

So, there are no good history books about the little period between the destruction of Pompeii in the first century and the battle for the Mediterranean which apparently began in 1521? In my view some of the most exciting history books published in the last thirty years have been about Late Antiquity and the Middle Ages. But your selection passes them all by. How narrow can you get!
