Among the most interesting works of 1994, Anthony Caro's Trojan War Sculptures are currently showing at Yorkshire Sculpture Park, Wakefield. While representing a departure for Caro from his better-known, more abstract work, they lose none of the artist'scharacteristic monumentality.
The hieratic quality of Caro's pieces is echoed in an exhibition of Norman art now on show at Norwich Castle Museum: carvings in wood and ivory which reflect the skill of a civilization too often neglected in favour of the outmoded "big-bang" concept of the Renaissance. The thesis is further invalidated by the British Museum's intoxicating exhibition of Byzantine art and culture.
