Established by Daniel Barenboim and the late Edward Said to promote Arab/Israeli understanding, the West-Eastern Divan Orchestra features young players from across various Middle-Eastern borders.
It's an object lesson in the need to accommodate one's presumed opponents: as one musician put it, "The orchestra is a human laboratory that can express to the whole world how to cope with the other". And what better vehicle than Beethoven's 9th, rendered here with youthful gusto and enthusiasm, accompanied by an equally spirited Leonore Overture No. 3 from Fidelio.
