Album: Tobias Hume, Poeticall Musicke / Fischer (Zig Zag Territoires)

Drawn from The First Part of Ayres (1605) and Captaine Humes Poeticall Musicke (1607), Marianne Muller's selection of Tobias Hume's works for one, two and three viola da gambas paints a one-sided picture of the Jacobean adventurer.

Though beautifully played by Muller, Liam Fennelly and Pau Marcos, Hume's dolorous dances sit strangely with Eric Fischer's Topographic Long-Range (2008), which explores the same techniques and textures in a very different musical language – spiked with the tang of East European folk music.
